How Telemedicine can improve the health care system

HOW TELEMEDICINE CAN IMPROVE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM IN NIGERIA

  Telemedicine is the use of digital information and communication technologies, such as computers and mobile devices, to access health care services remotely and manage health care.

   It has the potential to improve access to medical services that would otherwise not be available or difficult to access in distant rural communities and remote regions.

  It can also reduce the need for physical visits to a health care provider, while maintaining or even improving the quality of care. 

  The practice of telemedicine can be divided into two distinct categories:

  Real-time (synchronous)


  store-and-forward (asynchronous)

  Video conferencing: This allows patients and doctor to communicate remotely using video and audio technology.

  Secure message: Patients and doctors can communicate securely through messaging services, such as email or text message.

  Electronic health record: This allows doctors to store and share patient health information electronically.

  Remote monitoring: This technology allows doctors to monitor a patient health from a distance.

  Mobile application: Patients can use mobile applications to access information about their health track symptoms and connect with their doctors remotely.

  Wearable devices: Wearable devices can track physical activity, heart rate and other vitals signs and send this data to the doctor for review.

APPROACH

Telemedicine can improve health services in a number of ways including:

  Improving access to care:

Telemedicine can provide access to health services for people who may not be able to access traditional care.

   Reducing  wait times:

Telemedicine can reduce wait time for appointment and reduce the need to travel long distance for care.

  Reducing cost:

Telemedicine can reduce the cost associated with health care services, such as travel cost for patients and the cost of running a physical office.

  Increasing convenience:

Telemedicine can make it more convenience for patient to access care, as they can often schedule appointment outside of regular business hour.

  Improving communication:

Telemedicine can enhance communication between healthcare providers and patients, making it easier for patients to ask questions and get answers in a timely manner
